IKEA considering third party sales platform

Written by Peter Walker

IKEA is considering launching an online sales platform which will offer third party furniture alongside its own.

Torbjorn Loof, the chief executive of parent company Inter IKEA, told the Financial Times that proposals for a test site to rival the likes of Amazon or Alibaba are being worked on.

“What are the opportunities between the dominating, big, global platforms, and the company website? I think there are tons of opportunities,” he stated, also citing Zalando as having a platform that is “interesting to explore”.

Loof said IKEA was not yet in any talks with any of its competitors, but would like to be involved in the possibility of any industry-wide sales platform.

“We want to see and test and learn, to say: could this be something for us? For a specific part of the range or in specific types of markets?” he stated.

The concept of leasing furniture and selling it on other websites is part of Ikea’s global turnaround scheme, announced in November.

IKEA stated at the time that it would upgrade its e-commerce platform as part of the programme that could result in 7,500 jobs being axed over the next two years.
