Pret to launch new format stores with made-to-order food

Sandwich and coffee shop chain Pret A Manger has announced it is launching a new store format which features a more spacious environment with made-to-order food.

The company said the new stores will provide a family friendly environment and will be more suited to longer, relaxed visits.

The first new format stores will be opened in Broughty Ferry and Maidenhead in June, with the locations featuring a longer counter where customers can watch their food being made.

There will be more space for dine-in customers, with a play area for children, and the company will provide full porcelain crockery.

The company has developed a new menu for the new store format, with only one ‘ready-to-go’ refrigerated shelf for those customers on the move.

Pret A Manger said it is testing this format as it aims to adapt the brand to suit different working patterns and lifestyles.

The new format is part of Pret A Manger’s business strategy to reach more people across the country in locations where people live, commute and spend time with others.

The company has 500 shops in the UK and the company said its reach is growing with 82 per cent of new shops opening outside of London.

Pret’s franchise partners Hala Group and Joup Group will operate these new shops.
The launch of the new stores comes as the owner of the chain is reportedly bringing in new investors ahead of a potential initial public offering.

According to a report by the Financial Times, JAB Holding, the European investment group that purchased Pret for £1.5 billion in 2018, has employed advisers to explore options for the business ahead of a potential listing, including a stake sale.

“Throughout the past five years, we’ve made it a priority to bring Pret to more people, whether you’re a City worker commuting to the office, a parent juggling work and family life, or someone catching up with friends,” said Claire Clough, managing director for UK & Europe at Pret A Manger. “Now, we’re taking that further, making Pret a destination for customers in a bit less of a rush who want a comfortable space to enjoy delicious food and spend time with family and friends.

“Our teams have been hard at work making sure everything from the shop design to the unique menu items have been carefully thought through and we can’t wait to see how our customers respond.”
