Primark rolls out POC for cash and card self-checkouts in York

Primark has launched a proof of concept (POC) that accepts both cash and card payments at its self-service checkouts in York.

Unlike previous self-service checkouts that only accepted cards, this pilot project allows both payment methods.

Connor Button, Primark’s product leader, explained in a LinkedIn post that the solution will help the company understand more about customer behaviour and operational execution, with plans to integrate the system into other stores if the trial phase is successful.

The retailer said that the York trial aims to make the system more inclusive and more popular among all demographics.

Primark began introducing self-service checkouts in 2022, starting with stores in Sheffield and Northampton.

Between 2023 and 2024, the retailer continued expansion to other UK locations, including Truro, Chester, Llandudno, Harlow, and Oxford Street East, plus Mullingar in Ireland.

The initiative was developed with collaboration from Primark’s technology and retail operations.

“I'm excited on the positive impact this will have on further elevating our great customer and colleague experience!” wrote Button.

Last month, Primark launched its first store in the Middle East at Grand Plaza, The Avenues in Kuwait. The opening was carried out in partnership with Alshaya Group, marking the retailer’s first franchise store and 18th international market entry.

The flagship spans more than 60,000 sq ft of shopping space across two floors and will employ 350 staff. .
