Waitrose to create 550 jobs at new Bristol distribution centre as brand expands

Waitrose will open its first South West distribution centre in Avonmouth, Bristol, in early 2027, creating more than 550 jobs as part of a multi‑year £1 billion investment across the brand.

Operated by DHL, the 360,000 sq ft site will serve around 50 existing Waitrose shops in the region and support plans for future growth, the company said.

DHL is set to begin recruitment in spring, hiring about 480 warehouse colleagues and 80 drivers ahead of the launch. Waitrose said the facility will streamline deliveries across the South West and underpin improved availability through technology upgrades, including AI‑driven demand forecasting and increased automation to reduce manual processes.

The building has been designed as Waitrose’s most sustainable distribution centre to date, carrying a BREEAM Outstanding rating. Features include 1,200 solar panels, energy‑efficient systems and landscaped outdoor spaces. Waitrose estimates the site will cut annual supply chain emissions by 2,225 tonnes of CO₂, supported by access to a nearby biomethane refuelling station.

“As we grow, it’s essential that our supply chain grows with us,” said Alison Maffin, Waitrose’s supply chain director. “This new site strengthens our network, ensuring consistent service for our customers and creating over 550 jobs in a state‑of‑the‑art facility. DHL shares our commitment to sustainable logistics, making them the perfect partner for this next phase of our expansion.”

Martin Willmor, chief executive officer, DHL Supply Chain UKI, said: “We are excited to be working with Waitrose as they expand their regional presence while reducing supply chain emissions. The new Bristol site reflects our shared commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, whilst supporting the community.”

The move comes as Waitrose reports increasing traction with shoppers. The retailer’s market share has risen to 4.7 per cent, according to Worldpanel by Numerator, with average basket spend up 6.5 per cent over the 12 weeks to 28 December compared with the same period last year, outpacing gains at rivals. The company is also investing in its store estate, with upgrades across all 317 shops and plans to open a full‑line supermarket at the Brabazon development in Bristol next year, alongside recent convenience expansion.

Waitrose, part of the John Lewis Partnership, said the Avonmouth centre is integral to modernising its logistics network, improving service levels, and supporting controlled regional expansion while reducing environmental impact.
