Carrefour Italia partners with renewable energy company

Carrefour Italia has signed an agreement with Qair, an independent renewable energy company, as part of its wider decarbonisation plans.

As part of the agreement, a solar plant of more than 52 MWp will be constructed by 2026 in Italy’s Latium region and Qair will supply energy to the supermarket chain.

By 2030, Carrefour aims to reduce emissions by 50 per cent and source 100 per cent of its electricity from renewable sources. The company added that it wants to achieve group-wide carbon neutrality by 2040 and by 2026 100 per cent of its its top 100 suppliers must adopt a 1.5° climate trajectory or risk being deregistered.

“Through this partnership with Qair, we confirm Carrefour’s commitment in developing sustainable solutions aimed at reducing our environmental footprint,” said Jean Francois Dohogne, chief financial officer at Carrefour Italia. “This contract will allow Carrefour Italy to count on around 75GWh of renewable energy per year, the equivalent of powering 30 of its hypermarkets, in line with our ‘Benefit Corporation’ status and the specific goal of reducing our environmental impact.”

In July, the Carrefour Group announced plans to install photovoltaic power production equipment across 350 hypermarket and supermarket car parks in France. The shade structures are equipped with solar panels and will produce around 450 GWh per year - enough energy to power a city of 200,000 inhabitants.
