Carrefour Belgium is deploying cloud-based picking technology to fulfil scheduled e-commerce orders in store.
The technology, developed by StrongPoint, has an average picking rate of 240 items per hour, with peak performance reaching up to 350 items per hour.
It works on a cloud-based system which is designed to streamline the entire picking process, seeking to significantly reduce the time needed to fulfil each order.
The technology also offers configurable features to match a particular store’s size or structure.
Features include a system that automatically calculates the most efficient picking route, with or without zone-picking; automated systems to handle fast movers; and connection with electronic shelf labels (ESL).
The deployment is expected to begin and be completed by 2025.
Jan Pollier, Carrefour Belgium digital and e-commerce director said the technology fits retailer’s needs when it comes to in-store grocery order picking.
“It enables us to improve efficiency, reduce operational costs, and deliver a more reliable service to our customers,” he added.
Last year, Carrefour Belgium partnered with Swedish food waste company Deligate to launch an AI tool designed to manage best before dates at scale.
The supermarket said it currently has to process around 40,00 food items for discounts across 83 of its largest stores every day.
At the time, Carrefour said the technology will allows it track inventory in real time, anticipate changes in demand and make informed decisions to mitigate the risks involved with overstocking products.
