Currys has announced the appointment of Fredrik Tønnesen as its new group chief executive officer, succeeding Alex Baldock after more than seven years in the role.
Tønnesen, who currently leads the electronic retailer's Nordics business, has more than two decades of experience with Currys. He joined the business as a sales assistant before progressing through several senior leadership roles, including managing director for Norway and chief operating officer for the Nordics region.
Since becoming chief executive of Currys' Nordics division in March 2023, Tønnesen has overseen around 40 per cent of group revenue. The company said he had more than tripled operating profits in the region while also improving customer and employee satisfaction scores.
Tønnesen will take up the position on 3 August 2026. Baldock will step down from the board on the same date and support the leadership transition until the end of August.
Currys said the appointment follows a search process that considered both internal and external candidates.
Ian Dyson, chair of Currys, explained Tønnesen's experience and track record made him the right person to lead the retailer through its next phase of growth.
"He has huge experience inside the business and has led an extremely impressive operating performance improvement over the last three years,” said Dyson. "He understands our customers, our colleagues and our culture from the inside, and brings the right combination of clarity, energy and leadership to take Currys forward, building on the strong foundations that Alex and the team have put in place."
