Ford teams with Amazon to sell certified pre-owned vehicles online in three US cities

Ford Motor and Amazon have launched a programme for franchised Ford dealers to list and sell certified pre‑owned vehicles on Amazon’s Autos marketplace, starting in Los Angeles, Seattle and Dallas.

Customers can browse local dealer inventory, apply for finance, complete most paperwork online and schedule a collection from the chosen dealership. “The addition of Ford certified pre‑owned vehicles to Amazon Autos represents an exciting expansion of our store, giving customers access to thousands of quality vehicles backed by Ford’s comprehensive inspection and warranty programs,” said Fan Jin, global leader of Amazon Autos, in a statement reported by CNBC.

Ford said between 160 and 180 of its roughly 2,900 US retailers have expressed interest, with around 20 launched or launching soon, according to Reuters and Ford’s own programme overview. Michael Wayland of CNBC reported that “about a dozen have fully onboarded and launched, with about 10 more launching next week,” citing the companies.

The vehicles listed are certified pre‑owned rather than new. Amazon previously partnered with Hyundai to sell new models through its site, while Ford’s collaboration focuses on used cars that have been inspected, refurbished and certified by the manufacturer or dealer. “It’s about delivering the best of both worlds to our customers,” said Robert Kaffl, executive director of Ford US sales and dealer relations, in comments quoted by The Verge.

Ford’s Blue Advantage scheme provides three certification tiers. Gold Certified covers Ford vehicles up to six years old with fewer than 80,000 miles and a 172‑point inspection, paired with a 12‑month/12,000‑mile comprehensive limited warranty.

Blue Certified applies to vehicles up to 10 years old with fewer than 150,000 miles and a 139‑point inspection, with a 90‑day/4,000‑mile comprehensive limited warranty. EV Certified applies to electric Ford vehicles up to six years old with fewer than 80,000 miles and a specialised 127‑point inspection, with the same warranty coverage as Gold. Participating dealers also offer a 14‑day/1,000‑mile money‑back guarantee, according to Ford’s programme materials.

While the transaction begins on Amazon, the customer relationship remains with the dealer, which sets pricing, handles pickup and provides future servicing. The Verge noted that dealers will “have enormous sway over these online sales,” as Amazon acts as a middleman and offers “a new sales channel that connects them with millions of Amazon customers.”

The programme arrives as carmakers experiment with online retail experiences while remaining bound by state franchise laws. Reuters reported that customers complete purchases online but must collect vehicles from their selected dealer.
