Klarna partners with M&S for BNPL on website and app

Klarna has launched its buy now, pay later service on Marks & Spencer’s website and app for fashion, home and beauty purchases, the companies announced on 15 October.

The partnership enables customers shopping on M&S.com and the retailer’s app to spread the cost of eligible purchases without interest or a revolving balance. Klarna said the payment option comes with transparent terms and a clear end date.

Raji Behal, Klarna’s head of UK, Ireland and Western and Southern Europe, said the partnership would give M&S customers another way to manage their spending. “People deserve flexibility without paying interest for it, so our goal is simple: meet them wherever they shop,” he said.

Katherine Carlson, director of financial services at M&S, said the service was intended to give customers greater choice at checkout. “Customers shopping on M&S.com and through our app can now spread the cost in three interest-free payments with Klarna, offering more flexibility in how they pay for the things they love,” she said.

The launch expands Klarna’s presence in UK retail, with the payments provider stating that it works with more than 1.2 million merchants globally, including major department stores across the UK.

Klarna offers payment services online and in physical shops, as well as through Apple Pay and Google Pay. The company reported more than 120 million active users globally and 3.8 million transactions per day in its corporate information accompanying the announcement.

The new payment option applies to fashion, home and beauty purchases made online, rather than the retailer’s entire product range, the companies confirmed.

The partnership comes as retailers continue to offer instalment-based payment options at online checkout. Klarna’s three-payment model allows customers to divide eligible purchases into equal instalments without interest, although customers remain responsible for meeting the agreed payment schedule.
