Royal Mail is looking to recruit 33,000 seasonal workers - more than two thirds of its usual temporary staff increase.
“During these unprecedented times we believe it is critical that Royal Mail continues to deliver,” stated Sally Ashford, chief human resources officer at the Royal Mail.
“We want to do our best to deliver Christmas for our customers and support the effort on the pandemic," she added, noting that a rise in online shopping was driving delivery demand - expected to be stronger than ever this year, with many parts of the country under COVID restrictions.
The number of parcels shipped in the UK rose by seven per cent to 3.8 billion in 2019, equivalent to $16.1 billion in revenue, according to data from the Parcel Shipping Index from Pitney Bowes - with global parcel volume exceeded 100 billion for the first time in 2019.
ParcelHero recently warned that a doubling of online sales this year due to the Coronavirus has already created unprecedented demand, with many delivery and
logistics companies “stretched to full capacity” in the run up to the festive season.
Last week, Royal Mail launched a parcel pick-up service across the UK, with postmen and postwomen now able to collect parcels as well as deliver them on their round.
The move means that online sellers and online shoppers will no longer need to leave their home if they want to mail or return a pre-paid item by post.
