Shopify Fulfilment Network (Shopify) has reached an agreement to acquire the e-commerce shipping company Deliverr for $2.1bn.
The largest acquisition in Shopify’s history will mitigate supply chain complexity for merchants of all sizes, on and off Shopify, and democratise access to end-to-end logistics in a first for independent brands, the company said.
Deliverr’s technology will also strengthen Shopify’s ability to manage merchant inventory ‘from port to porch’ throughout products’ journeys to the warehouse network, distribution across sales channels, to their arrival at consumers’ doors.
Founded in 2017, Deliverr’s logistics network delivers upwards of a million orders per month for thousands of merchants in the US.
With the acquisition, Shopify said it plans to leverage Deliverr’s tech and expertise and power a new service called Shop Promise that will offer consumers two-day and next-day delivery options with their favourite merchants.
Shopify said that they are doubling down on logistics throughout an increasingly challenging and complex global supply chain environment, and the acquisition will strengthen the firm’s ability to help merchants adapt and fulfil orders as quickly as they need to in order to stay competitive.
The partnership is also aimed at making Shopify a most robust end-to-end logistics platform and giving merchants control over their inventory across all sales channels.
As a result of the deal, merchants will gain access to simplified multichannel inventory management with a single place for them to ship their inventory for different sales channels. These will span merchants’ online stores, brick-and-mortar locations, wholesale customers, marketplaces including Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and platforms like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
"Our goal is to not only level the playing field for independent businesses but tilt it in their favour—turning their size and agility into their superpower,” Tobi Lütke, founder and CEO of Shopify, said.
“Together with Deliverr, Shopify Fulfilment Network will give millions of growing businesses access to a simple, powerful logistics platform that will allow them to make their customers happy over and over again.”
