WHSmith to open checkout-free New York store

WHSmith is set to open its first checkout-free store in New York, featuring Amazon’s “Just Walk Out” technology.

The store, which will be in one of New York’s three major international airports, will use WHSmith’s own branding instead off the retailer’s other brands InMotion or MRG.

The store expects to launch within the coming weeks, though the exact date has not been announced.

The news comes amid a period of planned expansion for the Swindon-based retailer; WHSmith announced in July that it plans to open 18 technology and accessories stores across major UK airports.

The retailer, which currently has over 1,700 stores in more than 30 countries, will open stores at London Heathrow, London Stansted, Manchester, London Luton, Birmingham, East Midlands, as well as others.

Amazon also aims to expand the number of its checkout free stores in the UK and has announced plans to open new Amazon Fresh cashierless locations in Chingford and Holborn in London.

These will join cashierless stores the retail giant has already launched in 2021 featuring it’s Just Walk Out technology in Camden, Ealing, Wembley Park, White City, Canary Wharf, and Dalston.
