Waitrose lowers price of 200 items

Waitrose has lowered the prices of over 200 items, with around half of the prices lowered by at least 10 per cent.

The supermarket said that the decision is part of a £100 million investment and follows a similar move in February which saw price cuts on around 300 items.

Prices have been reduced across a wide range of items including meat, condiments and ice-cream.

Commenting on the news Charlotte Di Cello, commercial director for Waitrose, said: “We’ve made these cuts with absolutely no compromise on the high quality, high welfare, and delicious recipes our customers expect from us. We’ll still react to any drops in food inflation and pass on savings to our customers as soon as the prices we pay begin to fall, and we’ll continue to pay farmers a fair price for their products too.”

Brits have recently begun to experience something of a reprieve following months of grocery inflation.

Sainsbury’s last month announced that it would cut prices on more than 40 own brand products, including cheese, yoghurt and cream to help customers budget during the cost-of-living crisis.

Several UK supermarkets have also recently lowered the price of bread and butter after research by Which? found that sliced white bread prices have gone up by an average of 30 per cent over the past year, with overall supermarket own-brand prices increasing by almost 21 per cent over the 12-month period.

Prices of other staple foods, such as cheese, have risen by as much as 80 per cent, with overall food and drink prices having jumped by around 17 per cent.
