US retail giant Walmart has implemented several AI-powered tools designed to streamline operations, reduce inefficiencies and improve workplace productivity for its employees.
One newly introduced AI task management system assists with overnight stocking operations by helping prioritise workloads. Walmart reports this innovation has decreased shift planning time by approximately one hour, prompting plans for wider implementation across additional locations.
The company has also developed a real-time translation tool supporting 44 languages to improve communication between multilingual staff and customers. This system facilitates both text and speech conversations while incorporating Walmart-specific terminology including brand names. The retailer confirmed intentions to expand language options and introduce the tool globally in future updates.
Furthermore, Walmart is deploying an integrated solution combining RFID technology with its existing augmented reality platform, VizPick. This enhancement aims to simplify merchandise location processes and decrease time spent managing backroom inventory.
The combined system allows staff to rapidly scan storage areas while receiving visual guidance from the AR interface, directing them to specific apparel items requiring transfer to sales floors. This technological integration converts previously manual procedures into more efficient and accurate workflows.
Greg Cathey, senior vice president of transformation and innovation at Walmart, commented: "AI serves as a crucial facilitator in enhancing our operational methods. We maintain that its complete potential is realised only when combined with our workforce's capabilities. Providing intuitive, accessible technology to millions of associates creates not incremental but transformational impact."
The implementation of these tools demonstrates Walmart's ongoing commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to support its workforce and optimise retail operations.
