Airbnb revamps app with photoshoots, massages and home meals

Airbnb has revamped its app with the introduction of luxury services and experiences to boost its offering beyond holiday home rentals.

From Wednesday, the platform is offering a range of services including fully customisable home meals delivered by professional chefs, personalised photo shoots with expert photographers, massages performed by certified therapists, professional haircuts and more.

These new offerings are listed in 10 different categories on the new “Services” tab, which includes categories such as “chefs”, “photography”, “massages”, “makeup”, “personal training” and “ready meals”, with the service already available in 260 cities.

Airbnb, which currently offers seven million holiday rentals in more than 220 countries, said these services aims to provide high-quality experiences to Airbnb users and include chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants, award-winning photographers, and elite trainers, with entry offerings below $50.

“People often choose hotels because of the services they offer, like room service, access to a gym, or an appointment at the spa,” said Brian Chesky, Airbnb co-founder and chief executive. “Starting today, you can get those services, and more, right at your Airbnb.

“Now, we’re giving you the best of both worlds—amazing homes with services that make them even more special.”

The company's revamped app also includes an updated “Experiences” tab, first launched in 2016, offering new activities that also feature celebrities as hosts.

Some experiences already available on the app include “learn pastry-making at French Bastards bakery with chef Raphaelle Elbaz” or “play beach volleyball with Olympian Carol Solberg on Rio's famous Leblon beach”.

To book services, customers will not need to stay at an Airbnb property, they simply need to be users of the app.

The holiday app said experienced professionals and hosts who wish to participate in the initiative can apply via the website.
