Deliveroo boosts rider welfare with free virtual GP consultations

Deliveroo has announced a move to become the first instant delivery service to provide its UK riders with complimentary 24/7 virtual GP consultations, marking a significant expansion of its rider support programme.

The online food delivery company has partnered with insurance firm Chubb and healthcare provider Teladoc Health to offer self-employed riders free access to medical consultations via phone or video at any time.

Riders can now discuss medical concerns with UK-registered general practitioners through the Care On Demand app, without the need for prior GP registration. The service enables delivery drivers to access healthcare advice at a time that suits their flexible working schedules.

Camilla Kater, senior vice president of care and rider at Deliveroo, said: "We are proud to lead the way in providing innovative benefits that truly support our riders' needs. By ensuring our riders can access medical advice from a GP 24/7, we're reinforcing our commitment to rider welfare and setting a new standard for the industry."

The virtual GP service is part of a broader package of benefits Deliveroo offers its riders. These include free comprehensive insurance, sickness cover, financial support for new parents, and a collection of 1,500 online educational courses to support learning and development.

To access the service, eligible riders must download the Care On Demand app, register with their rider identification, and complete a personal verification process. The consultations cover non-emergency medical issues such as flu, allergies, and sinus infections.

This initiative follows Deliveroo's recent financial performance, with the company reporting a £3 million profit for the year to 31 December 2024, compared to a £32 million loss in 2023. The company has seen grocery sales reach 16 per cent of its group transaction value during the second half of the year.

The virtual healthcare service represents Deliveroo's continued commitment to supporting the welfare of its self-employed workforce, offering a flexible and accessible healthcare solution for its delivery riders.
