Lidl's UK festive sales surge to record £1bn

Lidl has announced that sales grew by a record seven per cent over the festive season compared to 2023, with the discounter’s turnover exceeding £1 billion in the four weeks to 24 December for the first time in its 30 years in Britain.

Approximately two million more customers shopped at Lidl over the Christmas period compared to the previous year, and the supermarket reported that Monday, 23 December, was the busiest trading day of the year.

In terms of products, Lidl stated it sold one fresh turkey every second and around 16 million pigs in blankets. The demand for these holiday staples significantly contributed to the record turnover.

Lidl attributed its success to the expansion of its party food range, which saw sales jump by 32 per cent. To cope with the festive demand, Lidl increased its supplier base in Britain by 20 per cent.

Lidl, which has over 970 stores across the United Kingdom, claims its customer base grew by a quarter compared with 2023, and over one million customers engaged with its advent calendar campaign on its app to obtain promotional offers.

Lidl, Britain's sixth biggest supermarket chain, was the fastest-growing bricks-and-mortar grocer in the year to end-November, with sales up 6.6 per cent year-on-year, according to research company Kantar.

“In 2024, we continued to raise the bar with product innovation, especially within our Deluxe range, as well as supporting all the community initiatives that are deeply important to us,” said Ryan McDonnell, Chief Executive at Lidl GB. “Looking ahead, we’re excited to build on our momentum, growing our presence across the country and continuing to deliver the highest quality at the best prices on the market.”
