MBNA/MasterCard in digital wallet first

MBNA has become the UK’s first card issuer to offer a MasterPass powered digital wallet to its customers. This has been launched initially as a pilot to MBNA employees with a roll-out to cardholders expected in 2015. They will be able to use it to buy goods, or pay for services, at a range of websites both in the UK and overseas.

The wallet is open, which means that in addition to MasterCard cards, consumers can use and store other branded credit, debit and prepaid cards. In November, Worldpay enabled over 20,000 small and medium sized online businesses to accept transactions via MasterPass. This compliments 6,000 existing sites in the UK which take payments in this way, including retailers such as Currys and PC World.

Scott Abrahams, head of acceptance and emerging payments at MasterCard UK & Ireland, comments: “Working with MBNA and Worldpay has helped MasterPass reach several milestones in the UK. MBNA customers will have the convenience and security of using the MasterPass service at over 30,000 online businesses in the UK and 60,000 across the world. Together we are offering a real alternative to consumers when paying online, removing the need to always input card details and the improved peace of mind that comes with this.”

Michael Donald, commercial and customer experience executive at MBNA, says: “Helping our customers make fast, secure and simple payments through MasterPass while shopping online is another way that we’re using cutting edge technology to make life easier for our customers. Having an MBNA Wallet will remove the need for our customers to input their card details every time they make a payment while knowing that, since the transaction is routed through our systems, that it is safe and secure."
