Vodafone announces launch of Pay by Bank in Germany

Telecoms giant Vodafone has announced the launch of Pay by Bank for customers in Germany.

The company partnered with Tink and Adyen on the Open Banking-powered payment method.

The move means Vodafone customers in the country can now transfer money directly from one bank account to another.

The payment method is facilitated by Tink's Open Banking platform and Adyen's end-to-end payments solution.

“We’re pleased to work with two leading FinTechs in Tink and Adyen to offer this new payment method for some of our customers in Germany," said Michael Reinartz, director innovation at Vodafone. "The simplicity and security of Pay by Bank provides a great option.”

The move comes as many businesses across the retail industry roll out similar Open Banking options for their customers.

Earlier this year, international pizza brand Papa Johns partnered with TrueLayer to launch Pay by Bank.

The company, which currently has nearly 6,000 restaurants across 45 countries, said that transactions are authenticated in real time, often using biometrics verification through customer banking apps.

At the time, Eamon Lindsell, Papa Johns senior product manager for digital technology said: “We’re always looking for ways to enhance our customers’ experience, from better ingredients to better technology."

In December 2024, Irish airline Ryanair also teamed up with TrueLayer to launch Pay by Bank on its website.

Ryanair customers are now able to use the payment method when booking flights.

Just Eat and Lastminute.com are also using the TrueLayer platform to provide Open Banking payment options.
