Walmart launches same day pharmacy delivery service

Walmart has announced that it will offer same day delivery of pharmacy products.

The delivery service is integrated into the Walmart app, which means customers can order medications when doing their online grocery shop.

It is currently available in Arkansas, Missouri, New York, Nevada, South Carolina and Wisconsin.

The US retailer said it will expand the service to 49 states by the end of January 2025.

Customers can choose from a variety of delivery options and are able to request a specific time slot that fits their schedule.

Walmart also plans to introduce on-demand and express delivery options to the service which would enable customers to receive products in as little as half an hour.

Walmart+ members will receive free delivery of pharmacy products. Non-Walmart+ members will pay the standard delivery charge of $9.95.

To ensure customer safety, Walmart said it has a number of procedures. Medications are securely packaged in tamper-evident packaging and customers will be able to track their orders in real-time via the Walmart app or website.

All prescription medications will be verified by licensed pharmacists.

In a recent survey conducted by Walmart, 55 per cent of respondents said that they would like to have their prescriptions delivered along with their groceries in one order, with this service found to be the most requested option.

Walmart said almost 4,600 of its stores have pharmacies and its extensive reach across the US means that it can deliver to over 86 per cent of households.

“Helping customers solve missions is core to everything we do and by combining pharmacy delivery into a single order, we're strengthening our commitment to providing everything they need, whenever and wherever they need it,” said Tom Ward, executive vice president and chief e-commerce officer at Walmart US “If you’re sick, we can deliver the necessary medicine along with everything else you need to feel better: cough drops, a heating pad, blanket and orange juice.”
