Walmart is expanding its same-day delivery service to include refrigerated and reconstituted medicines alongside groceries and essential items.
The new same-day Pharmacy Delivery service includes medications such as insulin, GLP-1s and paediatric amoxicillin and is currently available across the US.
The move comes after the retail giant piloted the delivery service in several US cities.
Eight months ago, the retailer extended the service to every Walmart store in the US.
Since then, it has fulfilled over four million medicine delivery orders.
Features provided in the service include delivery tracking via the Walmart app, insulated packaging to keep medicines at safe, regulated temperatures, protection from light exposure, and in-person delivery by appointment with electronic signature.
Once the prescription is ready, customers receive a notification on their pharmacy account.
From there, they can choose the delivery option and schedule across same-day, on-demand or express delivery.
Kevin Host, senior vice president of pharmacy at Walmart said the move aims to unlock new levels of convenience while also broadening access to critical medications for clients.
“Adding refrigerated prescriptions to our Pharmacy Delivery capabilities is the result of listening to our customers, identifying where we can create even better, seamless experiences and keeping the communities we serve at the heart of what we do,” he added.
The retailer recently announced an expansion strategy, announcing it is targeting businesses in the UK and Europe to sell on its global marketplace in the US as well as its international marketplaces in Canada, Mexico and Chile.
The US retail giant said that each week around 270 million customers visit over 10,750 stores and numerous e-commerce websites across 19 countries, which could offer UK and European sellers an “immediate” opportunity to expand internationally at scale.
