Walmart to expand drone delivery to 150 new stores

Walmart is expanding drone delivery to 150 new US stores over the next year as the retail giant looks to shift the service from a regional option to nationwide one.

The expansion aims to bring drone delivery to more than 40 million Americans, creating a network of more than 270 drone delivery points by 2027.

New service areas will include major metropolitan hubs such as Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami, with others to be announced later.

The move builds on a partnership with Alphabet-owned delivery provider Wing to roll out drone delivery in its services, which was launched in 2021.

In June 2025, Walmart extended its drone delivery service to five major US cities, becoming the first retailer to deliver by drone in five states: Arkansas, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas.

With the move, the service became available across 100 Walmart shops, increasing the company's drone delivery footprint significantly.

In January last year, the company had also announced that it had expanded its drone delivery service to reach about three-quarters of the population of Dallas-Fort Worth, in Texas.

Walmart stated that since launching the drone service, it has completed over 150,000 deliveries, offering products ranging from fresh fruit and pet food to over-the-counter medicines and essential household items.

Greg Cathey, senior vice president of digital fulfilment transformation at Walmart said drone delivery plays an important role in Walmart’s ability to deliver what customers want, exactly when they want it.

“By expanding drone delivery to new major metro areas, we are helping more customers solve for their last-minute needs faster than ever before,” he added.
