Australian supermarket chain Woolworths has unveiled its first fully automated central fulfilment centre in Western Sydney, marking a significant expansion of its online grocery capabilities.
The new 22,000 square metre facility increases regional online order capacity by more than 50 per cent, with the ability to process up to 60,000 online orders weekly. The centre employs advanced logistics technology from KNAPP, Woolworths' automation partner since 2019.
The automated operation features AI powered robotic stations that assist staff in accurately and efficiently picking orders across all temperature ranges. An innovative automatic bagging system further accelerates packing processes.
Woolworths stated the facility enables shorter lead times and substantially improves same day delivery capacity, enhancing the overall online shopping experience for customers.
Sally Copland, managing director of eComX at Woolworths, commented: "Western Sydney represents one of our largest and fastest growing eCommerce markets. We're excited to expand our service capacity with this first automated fulfilment centre in Auburn. Online demand has grown by over 20 per cent in the past two years."
Copland added: "This world class facility will dramatically improve order picking speed and accuracy for our Western Sydney customers."
