Aldi named cheapest supermarket in February by Which?

Which? has named Aldi as the cheapest supermarket in February.

The consumer champion’s findings were based on the prices of 72 everyday items at Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrisons, Ocado, and Asda.

The average basket price at Aldi came in at £125.43, besting second-place Lidl at £128.19, and third place Asda at £140.51.

Which? said its latest pricing analysis demonstrated that shoppers could make considerable savings on their groceries depending on where they buy their food.

“Our latest research found that Aldi was the cheapest supermarket in February, with Lidl following closely behind,” said Ele Clark, Which? retail editor. “With food prices continuing to put immense pressure on household budgets, it’s no surprise to see many people turning to the discounters, especially as shoppers could save up to 30 per cent by doing so.”

With many consumers still struggling to put food on the table, the organisation said it is “imperative” that the government and supermarkets continue to do everything they can to support vulnerable customers, including by ensuring cheaper budget ranges are available in local convenience stores.

“Here at Aldi, we are proud to have maintained our position as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for the past three years,” said Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi. “We know that the ongoing cost-of-living crisis is bringing a lot of financial worries for consumers and that’s why we’ve invested more in price cuts than ever before.”

Last month Aldi lowered prices on a range of fruit and vegetables with over 50 items falling in price by an average of seven per cent.

The supermarket said the new round of price cuts covered around a quarter of its produce range.
