Amazon has announced the launch of its Prime subscription service in South Africa. The subscription will cost 59 Rand (£2.70) a month, or 399 Rand (£18.23) a year, and provide subscribers with free next-day delivery on qualifying purchases, as well as free same-day delivery within Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria with no minimum spend per purchase.
The service will offer the same additional benefits as it does in other countries, including access to the retail giant’s streaming service.
The company will also run its Prime Day sales event in the country for the first time, which will take place at the end of June. Robert Koen, managing director, Sub-Saharan Africa at Amazon, said: "We are thrilled to offer South African customers world-class shopping and entertainment benefits in a single membership through Amazon Prime.
"Since launching Amazon in South Africa two years ago, we have built a store our customers love, with a great selection of local and international products backed by a reliable delivery experience.
Launching Prime is the next exciting milestone on our journey in the country, deepening our commitment to becoming a meaningful part of South Africans' daily lives by offering even more convenience, savings, and entertainment."
Amazon now runs Prime Day in 27 territories. In 2025, customers in the UK alone spent £2.08 billion on shopping during the event.
This year, Amazon moved the event forward a month from July to June, to avoid other major events held during the month including the FIFA World Cup and US Independence Day.
Amazon plans to push more household items in this year’s sales event, with Jamil Ghani, vice president of Amazon Prime, having told Reuters yesterday that the firm intends for grocery deliveries to account for a greater proportion of its sales.
