Amazon opens ‘world’s first’ zero-carbon grocery store

Amazon has claimed its latest Amazon Fresh store is ‘the world’s first grocery store’ to aim for zero-carbon certification from the International Living Future Institute.

The retail giant said that the store has over a dozen upgrades and features incorporated into its design to help make it the first-ever grocery store to pursue the zero-carbon certification.

These features include:CO2-based refrigeration which reduces emissions; additional doors on refrigeration cases which reduce energy consumption; lower carbon concrete; responsibly sourced interior wood signage; energy-efficient LED lights; electric kitchens and hot water heaters; low-flow fixtures in restrooms and kitchens which reduce water use; 100 per cent renewable electricity; and free EV charging for customers.

Amazon says that these upgrades mean the store will save nearly 185 tons of CO2e each year, “equivalent to driving around the Earth 18 times in a standard passenger vehicle”.

“We are constantly thinking about what we can do to make the customer shopping experience easier, more seamless, and more sustainable,” said Stephenie Landry, vice president of Amazon Grocery. “We know many customers are prioritising sustainability in what products they buy and where they choose to shop.

"With our newest Amazon Fresh store, we are taking the next step on our path to becoming a net-zero carbon business by 2040, and we welcome customers to experience this firsthand while shopping with us in this store.”
