Asda hires Lidl veteran to oversee Express stores

Asda has hired Matt Heslop to lead its stores and depots operation as part of changes to its executive leadership team.

Heslop joins Asda from Lidl, where he worked for 20 years in a variety of roles, most recently as chief operating officer officer.

At Asda, Heslop will be responsible for overseeing the 470 convenience stores in the Asda Express division.

Asda has also announced Simon Gregg, senior vice president ecommerce and retail south, will leave the business in July. The retailer has not yet announced who will take on Gregg’s role.

Additionally, Matt Kelleher will join Asda in July to oversee the supermarket’s ecommerce and data functions. His appointment was announced earlier this year and he joins the firm from Morrisons, where he was previously chief information officer.

“I’m delighted to announce Matt Heslop’s appointment to lead a critical part of our operation and drive the next stage of our growth journey,” said Mohsin Issa, co-owner of Asda. “He is an experienced operator with a proven track record in managing substantial retail operations in a fast-growing company.

“Along with Matt Kelleher, who assumes the role of Chief Digital Officer in July, these appointments further strengthen the leadership team as we continue to deliver against our strategy.”
