Asda is testing 3D holograms, electronic shelf labels and other new technologies to try and make both its staff’s lives easier and customers’ shopping experience better.
The grocery chain’s Stevenage store is a testbed for more than 20 different initiatives, including 3D holographic signs in the store’s bakery department which advertise products and tell customers how to use its Scan & Go technology.
“We’re one of the first retailers in the UK to test out the holograms in our store,” employee Michael Rose said. “The feedback has been very positive and the whole idea of the test is to collect feedback and gather views.”
The store has also installed a device which allows customers to have a two-way conversation with store staff, answering questions about products and availability.
In the laundry aisle, paper price labels have been replaced with electronic ones “about the size of a post-it note” and running on batteries which last up to five years.
Rose explained: “In the future they’ll be fully integrated into our system so any price changes can be loaded up immediately – we can have 3,000 price changes in a week so could save our colleagues a lot of time.”
The Stevenage store also now has an automated parcel service for Click and Collect shoppers.
This follows Asda announcing a new sustainable concept store, where customers are encouraged to fill up their own containers with loose products.
