Tesco website and app crash due to technical issues

Tesco's website and app were hit by a technical glitch on Tuesday, leaving hundreds of customers unable to complete their online grocery shopping.

The UK's largest supermarket confirmed that issues began just before 10am on 1 April, with service status website Downdetector logging more than 500 reports from customers experiencing problems by 9:45am.

Responding to customer complaints on social media platform X, Tesco stated: "We are aware of issues with our app and website, I'm sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. Our information technology teams are working hard to have this fixed as soon as possible, please keep checking back periodically and hopefully they will be working shortly."

A message displayed on the Tesco app read: "It's not you, it's us. There's a problem at our end, but we're trying to fix it right now. Sorry for the inconvenience. Please come back later and try again. Thank you for your patience."

A spokesperson for the grocery giant told Retail Gazette: "We are working hard to fix a technical issue that is temporarily impacting customers using our website and app. We're sorry for the inconvenience."

Later, Tesco confirmed the issue had been resolved, with a spokesperson stating: "We have fixed a technical issue that temporarily impacted customers using our website and app. We're sorry for the inconvenience."

The supermarket did not disclose what caused the problem or whether any deliveries were affected by the outage.

This is not the first time Tesco has experienced online shopping difficulties this year. In February, the company was hit by another technical glitch that caused items to be removed from customer baskets or marked as unavailable during checkout processes.

Rival supermarket Iceland took the opportunity to comment on Tesco's troubles, posting on social media: "Tesco's website is down...April Fools, oh wait, it's not a joke," in what one user described as "cold," to which Iceland's social media manager replied it was "still a burn."
