Depop launches AI-powered listing from one photo

London-based ecommerce firm Depop has introduced a new AI-powered listing description feature that utilises image recognition and generative AI (genAI) to expedite its resale process.

This new technology allows users to obtain a more detailed description of a product by uploading a picture of it. The AI-generated listing description includes various categories such as colour, sub-category, and brand.

The description generation tool employs genAI features designed to provide a unique and authentic tone that resonates with the Depop community. It incorporates relevant hashtags and mirrors the distinctive way inventory is described and represented by sellers on the marketplace.

To use the feature, sellers can upload an image of an item using the selling button and click ‘Generate Description’. They can then use, adjust, or remove the description as needed.

The feature is available to all users in English-speaking countries, including the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Ireland.

This move reflects Depop's efforts to continually expand its suite of AI and machine learning-driven enhancements to boost the customer experience.

Over the past year, the firm has introduced a series of AI-powered features aimed at driving sales growth and enhancing the shopping experience. These include predictive recommendations and pricing guidance driven by fine-tuned language and vision models, as well as improvements to search and algorithmic personalisation.

Rafe Colburn, Chief Product and Technology Officer at Depop, said: “We know that writing a description for an item in a blank text box can be a time-consuming part of listing for both new and regular Depop users. Adding intelligent, automated descriptions provides inspiration to speed up and simplify the process, meaning our community can list more, sell more, and earn more while contributing to a more circular fashion economy.”
