Klarna launches ChatGPT tool for shopping recommendations

Klarna has partnered with OpenAI to build a plugin using ChatGPT to give shoppers a more personalised experience.

The popular AI chatbot has made waves since launching in November 2022, with the company claiming that it is the most-advanced tool of its kind.

Customers using Klarna’s Buy Now, Pay Later sevice (BNPL) can ask AI tool for ideas, with the plugin offering recommendations and links to suitable products via Klarna’s search and compare tool.

The Klarna plugin, which can be installed directly from ChatGPT’s plugin store, automatically chooses when to use the tool based on the conversation. Shoppers can also provide further details or ask for additional recommendations.

Klarna said it was committed to developing AI safely and responsibly and will roll out the new technology in stages. The plugin will initially be available for ChatGPT Plus subscribers in the US and Canada, later being introduced to other users following a “period of safety testing, development and improvement”.

Commenting on the news Sebastian Siemiatkowski, co-founder and chief executive at Klarna, said: "I’m super excited about our plugin with ChatGPT because it passes my ‘north star’ criteria that I call my ‘mum test’, i.e. would my mum understand and benefit from this. And it does because it’s easy to use and genuinely solves a ton of problems - it drives tremendous value for everyone.“

Klarna recently announced it will start charging late fees for its service and launching automatic payments in the UK. From 16 March, users will be charged a fee of £5 after a seven-day grace period and four reminders.
