Lidl sees champagne sales jump ahead of coronation

Lidl has seen sales jump as people stock up ahead of the celebrations for the coronation of King Charles.

The retailer said sales of quiches have jumped by a third with champagne sales increasing by almost 50 per cent and sales of premium champagne hitting 64 per cent.

Other popular items include scotch eggs and pork pies, which have seen sales rise by 15 per cent and 10 per cent respectively.

This follows the news that a fifth of households will be buying extra groceries for the coronation.

According to a survey by NIQ, the extra bank holiday in Britain will see an increase in sales of beer, wine, and spirits along with ‘special’ groceries as people gather to celebrate the event. Around 15 per cent of households will buy memorabilia to celebrate the coronation,

A Lidl GB spokesperson said: “While it’s clear that Lidl shoppers have already started getting in their celebratory essentials, there’s still ample opportunity for those who have left it until now to get what they need for the weekend’s festivities.”
