LloydsPharmacy will permanently shutter any remaining stores located inside of Sainsbury's supermarkets with immediate effect.
The company operates 237 branches inside of Sainsbury's supermarkets, with all locations to permanently cease operation by the end of business on Tuesday, 13 June.
The news has been confirmed by Lloyds Pharmacy, with Pharmacy Business magazine previously reporting that the closures were initially planned to be phased over the next year. Lloyds Pharmacy blamed "changing market conditions" for the closures which will put 2,000 jobs at risk.
Lloyds Pharmacy, which was acquired by private equity firm Aurelius last year, is the second-largest pharmacy chain in the UK behind Boots. The company is also reportedly considering closures of some standalone stores, with this plan not affected by today's news.
Confirming the news to Pharmacy Business, a spokesperson for Lloyds Pharmacy said: “In January 2023 LloydsPharmacy announced the withdrawal of pharmacy services from all Sainsbury’s stores, to take place throughout 2023.
“It can now confirm that any remaining branches within the Sainsbury’s estate will close by 13 June 2023.”
“Throughout the process, LloydsPharmacy has been committed to helping patients easily find a suitable alternative provision. It has kept patients informed of when services from their specific pharmacy will end so that they can transfer their nominations as needed.”
