M&S appoints non-executive director

Marks and Spencer (M&S) has appointed Cheryl Potter as non-executive director on 1 March 2023.

Potter is the former head of the global consumer team at global private equity firm Permira, which has €75 billion in assets under management.

At Permira, Potter spent 20 years working with management teams as well as serving on the boards of several brands including Dr Martens, Homebase and Birds Eye.

She is also a founding patron of The Prince’s Trust Women Supporting Women and chair of Level 20, a not-for-profit organisation focused on getting more women into senior investing roles.

Commenting on the news, M&S Chairman Archie Norman said: "I am delighted that a superstar of the private equity world is joining us at M&S. She brings enormous energy, passion and a strong shareholder value focus to the Board, as well as a great track record as a role model and advocate of women in leadership.”

Marks and Spencer recently announced it will invest £480 million into its stores to make them ‘bigger and better’, creating 3,400 jobs in the process. The retailer will open around 20 new stores in the next financial year, with five of them opening at former Debenhams sites.
