M&S Food has dropped or frozen the price of around 200 items in a bid to support customers during the cost-of-living crisis.
The retailer will cut the price of 70 products including chickpeas, yoghurt and handwash, with savings of up to 20 per cent.
Around 150 items, such as meat and vegetables, will have their prices frozen until autumn.
Roughly 50 products from the company’s healthy eating range have also been frozen, with the supermarket saying that 30 per cent of British families are now looking to eat more healthily.
The announcement comes after prime minister Rishi Sunak abandoned plans to ask supermarkets to impose a voluntary price cap on basic goods.
According to research from consumer watchdog Which?, trust in the grocery industry has fallen to a nine-year low.
“We know value is everything to our customers right now, and while they’re looking forward to a great summer, they’re also looking for certainty on spending,” said Alex Freudmann, managing director at M&S Food. “Our latest price investment across 200 products upholds our trusted value promise and delivers on that certainty,”
Several supermarkets have recently announced price cuts in response to the cost-of-living crisis and rising food prices.
On Monday, Morrisons said it would lower the price of around 500 products.
Waitrose also announced it will lower the prices of around 200 items with around half dropping in price by 10 per cent.
Asda has also frozen the prices of over 500 items until the end of August, while last month Sainsburys said it would cut prices on around 40 of its own brand products.
Last week Tesco chief executive Ken Murphy, who recently lowered the prices of own brand bread and butter, said that he is seeing signs of easing inflation which is enabling the company to reduce the price of some goods.
