Matalan rolls out new point of sale platform in stores

Fashion and homewares retailer Matalan has implemented a new point-of-sale platform across its stores.

Matalan has expanded its partnership with Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions to install VisualStore Commerce Platform, which the retailer said will make the shopping process faster, smoother and more connected across channels.

The platform's self-enablement features include an intuitive screen designer, cutting promotion tool and a configuration management tool to allow store teams to make updates without relying on third-party support.

The company claims that everyday transactions, such as loyalty redemptions, promotions and online order pickups, can be handled more efficiently and flexibly by using the technology.

Matalan is the first company to deploy the technology in the UK and plans to pilot the platform in summer 2025. The company expects to roll out the platform across all stores by spring next year.

As part of the project, Matalan will also upgrade approximately 1,800 in-store devices to Toshiba's latest generation hardware to ensure a more responsive and reliable experience.

"We're delighted to be expanding our partnership with Toshiba, who share our commitment to delivering innovative solutions that improve the experience for both our customers and our colleagues," said Chris Salkeld, director of IT & transformation. "We're always trying to find new ways to serve our customers better and look forward to rolling out the VisualStore platform across our stores."

Retail should not be a high-risk occupation. As a company, we are focused on listening to our colleagues and customers to help them with the issues they are facing in-store and so far, the feedback on our body cameras has been excellent. They act as a great visual deterrent, help to de-escalate situations and overall, this project has significantly aided our goal to make the retail environment safer.
