Poundland finishes Poundshop.com acquisition

Poundland has finished its acquisition of online discount retailer Poundshop.com.

The discount retailer said the move is part of a wider transformation that will see it roll out its own online store next year and will provide the infrastructure to enable a national roll-out of its e-commerce platform.

Poundshop.com, founded in 2014, has around 400,000 customers in the UK and is based in Wednesbury, West Midlands.

The sum paid for the acquisition was not disclosed.

The acquisition includes Poundshop.com’s online platform, it’s intellectual property, its picking and fulfilment operations, as well as its customer database.

The move will see Poundland offer PEP&CO clothes and homeware, and Poundland’s retail and transformation director Austin Cooke is set to lead the day-to-day operations of its online business.

Poundland began trialling online shopping in June 2021, allowing shoppers from Birmingham, Derby, Dudley, Stoke on Trent, Walsall, and Wolverhampton to buy food and drink, entertainment, DIY, and health and beauty items.

The news comes after Poundland’s parent company Pepco Group announced it is planning to create around 13,000 net new jobs across Europe in the next three years as it opens more stores across the region.

“It’s great to warmly welcome the Poundshop.com team to Poundland,” said Barry Williams, managing director at Poundland. "This acquisition puts power and pace behind our aspirations
