Primark has become the latest UK retailer to increase pay for its employees, raising wages by an average of 12 per cent.
The company will increase pay from 1 April for all hourly-paid staff working in store to £11 per hour, with employees in London receiving £11.51.
Primark added that it will scrap age-related pay rates for employees under 23 years of age so that all 26,000 employees are on one rate of pay.
The retailer previously increased wages by 12 per cent a year ago.
Commenting on the news Kari Rodgers, UK retail director at Primark, said that employees are a “vital part” of the retailer. She added: “We want all of our colleagues to continue to be competitively rewarded for their work and this pay increase reflects our commitment to continue to invest in our people and our stores as we continue to grow.”
The move comes as a number of other UK retailers announce they are increasing pay for employees. Electronics retailer Currys recently said that it would increase pay for around 10,000 store employees, the fourth in 18 months. Marks and Spencer said that it would increase hourly pay from £10.20 to £10.90 from 1 April.
Aldi recently said it would give a pay rise to over 28,000 employees working in its stores from 1 July 2023, while Tesco is increasing pay by seven per cent.
