Retailers set for Euro 2024 spending surge

Britain's retailers are anticipating a substantial uplift in consumer spending as the Euro 2024 football tournament commences, with shoppers forecast to loosen their purse strings on groceries, alcoholic beverages, and new televisions to immerse themselves in the action.

A poll of 2,000 consumers conducted by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) revealed the nation's football obsession could deliver a much-needed sales boost to struggling stores.

Following poor May figures that showed high street spending growth of a lowly 0.7 per cent year-on-year, the BRC's Consumer Sentiment Monitor indicates England and Scotland's participation in the Euros will stimulate increased consumer purchasing.

More than one-in-eight respondents, or 13 per cent, stated their intention to increase outlay on snacks, beverages, and takeaway meals while viewing matches. An additional 9 per cent intend to host or attend viewing gatherings with family and friends.

Electronics retailers are likewise poised for a sales surge, with 6 per cent of shoppers expressing interest in procuring new televisions or devices to capture the on-field drama. Four per cent of consumers surveyed indicated plans to purchase official tournament merchandise.

However, the anticipated spending appears concentrated among younger demographics. While nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of those aged 18-24 indicated they would augment grocery expenditure, a mere 4 per cent of over-55s expressed similar intentions.

"British retailers could secure a hat-trick, with uplifts in groceries, electronics and official merchandise sales," said Kris Hamer, the BRC's Director of Insight. "Following sluggish spring trading, shoppers are anticipated to kickstart their summer spending during the Euros. One can only hope England and Scotland progress to the final."
