Sainsbury’s cuts 500 office roles to fund e-commerce and lower prices

Chief executive of Sainsbury’s Simon Roberts has announced proposals that would see the company cut 500 office roles in a bid to fund lower prices, online shopping, and product innovation.

The decision, which is still subject to consultation, is part of the supermarket retailer’s plan to adapt the business to “put food first,” with the savings created being invested back into its core food business.

The proposals include cutting office space and store support centre teams in commercial operations, human resources, supply chain & logistics, technology and general merchandise & clothing.

Roberts also revealed plans to further grow the sales of groceries online. The Sainsbury’s boss said that by March 2022, more than 20 stores in around London will have their online departments expanded.

“Our new plan puts food first and will create a simpler, nimbler and more efficient business,” said Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s chief executive. “The money we save will enable us to invest in what customers really care about - lower prices, exciting new products and the most convenient ways for them to shop."

He added: “I know change is difficult, but to do the best job we can for our customers, it is vital that we adapt. I understand this will be a very difficult time for affected colleagues and we will do everything we can to fully support them.”
