Sainsbury's implements new checkout technologies

Sainsbury's has signed a seven-year agreement with CX firm NCR Voyix to provide a quicker checkout experience for customers.

Under the partnership Sainsbury's will upgrade its checkout technology, implementing around 22,500 point of sale and self-checkout systems across supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol stations.

Using cloud technology from NCR Voyix, the supermarket said it will speed up the customer journey by receiving real-time data and analytics. AI will enable the supermarket to analyse sales, estimate future store performance, employee productivity and cash management.

The new platform will enable employees to approve transactions remotely via tablet, speeding up the checkout process. Sainsbury's added that the self-checkout systems will use AI to provide personalised promotions tailored to each customer.

Sainsbury’s said the new technology will give it the flexibility to adapt to market trends quickly, eliminate in-store complexities and pave the way for innovative digital and in store experiences for customers.

“Our commitment to unbeatable quality food and great service, whether in store or online, is strengthened by NCR Voyix technology,” said Clodagh Moriarty, chief retail and technology director. “NCR Voyix has grown alongside Sainsbury’s for two decades, unlocking new capabilities and optimising product management, sales forecasting and store efficiencies.”
