Spar UK hires operations and strategy director

Spar UK has appointed Lee Johnson as its new operations and strategy director.

He joined last month from the position of vice president for global financial planning and analysis at beauty group Coty. Prior to that, Johnson worked at Lego, Microsoft, SC Johnson and Sara Lee.

It is likely that he will be part of Spar’s focus on developing its digital capabilities during the pandemic. In June, Spar International chief executive Tobias Wasmuht spoke about the intention to roll-out online retail services to match the “new low-touch economy”.

Last month, Irish Spar and Eurospar shops were the first to launch MishiPay's Scan, Pay & Go checkout technology as part of a new pilot scheme across the network, while in England and Wales earlier this year some stores began using the Snappy Shopper app.

Louise Hoste, managing director at Spar UK, hailed Johnson's breadth of experience in finance, operations and strategy, adding that "he will play a significant role in how we operate and plan in the future".
