Stripe to power Amazon's 'just walk out' tech in Canada and Australia

Amazon has partnered with Stripe to provide payments for retailers using its ‘just walk out’ technology in Australia and Canada.

The technology from Amazon allows shoppers to buy products without having to queue at checkouts to pay for their items.

Merchants in Australia and Canada use Stripe Terminal’s WisePad3 reader attached to physical entry gates, with Stripe automatically processing the payment after the guest leaves.

Shoppers enter the store by using a credit card or mobile wallet.

A series of sensors across the store detect which items shoppers take or return from shelves, with customers able to leave the store without having to pay at a till.

“The only thing better than a speedy checkout is no checkout at all and I’m thrilled that Stripe is powering Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology payments,” said Eileen O’Mara, chief revenue officer at Stripe. “With Stripe Terminal and Connect, merchants using Just Walk Out technology will benefit from the same reliability that ensures millions of successful transactions on Amazon.”

In July 2023, Amazon closed three of its just walk out stores in London. The online retailer said that its decision followed a review of its “portfolio of stores” but that it plans to open new outlets in future.
