The most-downloaded app in the US expands to Europe

Low-cost e-commerce platform Temu has expanded into Europe.

Temu is owned by PDD Holdings, and is the sister company to Chinese discount online retailer Pinduoduo. The company operates a similar cross-border model to Shein, and has made waves since expanding into the US in September 2022.

The company, which sells shoes, jewellery, beauty accessories and home goods directly from Chinese merchants at a low price, has started selling into European markets including the UK, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and The Netherlands.

Temu, also available in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, operates out of Boston, Massachusetts, and saw 19 million downloads on Apple and Google’s respective mobile app stores in the first quarter of 2023, becoming the most-downloaded app in the US.

According to YipitData, the platform’s gross merchandise value grew from $3 million in September to $192 million in January.
