Tesco has partnered with EO Charging to provide the charging infrastructure it will use to rollout a fully electric fleet by 2028.

EO said Tesco sites in Lakeside, Oxford, Glasgow, and Enfield are set to receive more than 200 AC fast chargers and five DC rapid chargers for everyday charging requirements and emergency use.

Amazon, DHL, Go-Ahead, and Uber already use charging solutions provided by EO.

The Stowmarket, Suffolk-based company will provide Tesco with consultation on charging hardware, year-round support and maintenance for charging infrastructure, and management of the infrastructure via its EO Cloud software platform.

Tesco has already rolled out 30 electric vans during 2021, and said plans to introduce a further 150 in 2022.

The Big Four supermarket’s fleet is currently 5,000-plus vehicles strong.
In addition, Tesco is currently leading the way in terms of offering electric charge points to consumers according to research from Electrifying.com.

The supermarket offers EV charging points at 45 per cent of its stores, compared to Morrison’s 40 per cent, Asda’s 19.7 per cent, Lidl’s 15 per cent, and Aldi’s 10 per cent.

The news comes as retailers face pressure to make their fleets electric, The British Retail Consortium (BRC) urged the government to encourage the take up of green technologies and reduce emissions from goods vehicles in April.

In a letter to the transport secretary, the trade association said retailers are making progress to address the issue, but that without government intervention to generate faster adoption of green vehicles, it would be impossible for the industry to reach its 2045 net zero target.

The Government is currently set to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030.
