Walgreens Boots Alliance loses CIO months after CEO departed

The chief information officer at Walgreens Boots Alliance has reportedly left the company just over a year after he was hired.

According to an internal note seen by Bloomberg from interim chief executive officer Ginger Graham, Hsiao Wang had been on a leave of absence but he is no longer at the company effective immediately.

The news was later confirmed by a spokesperson for the group which operates pharmacy chains in the US and UK.

Wang, who was only appointed in 2022, was previously chief information officer at arts-and-crafts retailer Michaels. He was hired to strengthen the company’s tech and facilitate its transition into healthcare services.

The memo said that former Northwestern Mutual chief information officer Neal Sample will step in to help make decisions around tech initiatives and sit on the executive committee. Sample previously served as chief information officer and chief operating officer roles at Express Scripts, a pharmacy benefits manager that was purchased by Cigna.

Along with seeking a permanent replacement for Wang, Walgreens is also looking to appoint a new chief exec after Rosalind Brewer announced her abrupt departure at the end of August, and a new chief financial officer after James Kehoe left in July after five years.

Late last week reports emerged that the company is considering former Express Scripts chief executive officer Tim Wentworth to take the top job at Walgreens. While the markets have reacted positively, the report cautioned that a final decision has not been made and Wentworth may not end up in the job.
