Walmart brings in-store meal delivery service to app

Walmart has launched a meal delivery service from its in‑store restaurant partner Subway.

The US retail giant said the move will allow customers in selected locations to order Subway products directly through the Walmart app or website and receive them via its Express Delivery service in as little as 30 minutes.

This marks Walmart’s first restaurant integration within Express Delivery and forms part of its wider strategy to bring more customer needs into a single shopping journey.

Customers using the service can browse the Subway menu, customise sandwiches and other items, and add meals to the same basket as their regular Walmart purchases. Walmart said Subway menu pricing will remain consistent with in‑restaurant pricing, while some participating locations will offer exclusive menu items.

The rollout has begun across selected stores in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas. Walmart said it plans to extend the service to around 1,400 locations by the end of the summer.

Walmart added that eligible customers will see the Subway ordering option automatically within the app and website based on their location.

Subway is Walmart’s largest in‑store restaurant partner, and the two companies have worked together since 2004.

Tracy Poulliot, executive vice president of eCommerce and marketing at Walmart US, said the company wants to simplify everyday shopping decisions.

"The future of retail is about bringing more of customers’ everyday needs into a single, seamless experience," she said. "Bringing Subway delivery into the Walmart app is another way we're using our proximity to customers and scale to make everyday decisions simpler and everyday life a little easier."

At the beginning of the year, Walmart launched its commercial ultra‑fast drone delivery service in selected Walmart stores in the Houston area.

The drones use a tether and winch system to lower packages weighing up to about 2.5 pounds to a precise spot about the size of a picnic blanket on a customer's property.
