eBay launches hub for pre-loved furniture

eBay UK has launched a new platform to encourage shoppers to consider buying “pre-loved” items when refurbishing their homes.

The Better Than New Homeware Hub showcases vintage, refurbished or repaired items.

The launch follows research from eBay which found that people refresh their homes around three times a year on average. According to the e-commerce giant, the UK throws away around half a million tonnes of furniture a year, with the new hub aiming to prevent furniture ending up in landfill.

The online retailer claims almost half of people buy pre-loved furniture due to cost savings. Around 37 per cent do so for environmental reasons and just over a third of consumers believe pre-loved furniture is more unique, said the platform.

“This new hub places a much needed spotlight on the impact fast-furniture is having on our planet and showing shoppers there’s a better way to refresh the home without creating more waste,” said Rachel Miles, head of home and garden at eBay UK. “Customers will be able to find a wonderful assortment of items from sofas to lighting with lots of character that support the fight against fast-furniture and correct existing perceptions around affordability.”

Last year eBay partnered with the British Fashion Council for a circular fashion fund aimed at helping grow small companies which develop sustainable fashion solutions. The fund issued £100,000 in grants – with the six winners given £15,000 each.
