Aldi customers save £17m with Too Good To Go surprise bags

Aldi has said that shoppers have saved over £17 million since it launched its partnership with Too Good To Go in February 2023.

Too Good To Go is the world’s largest surplus food platform.

Aldi sells surprise bags which contain a range of grocery products that are approaching their sell-by or use-by dates at a lower price, costing £3.30 for at least £10 worth of food.

Shoppers can gain access to these reduced-price bags by downloading the Too Good To Go app and searching for their local Aldi store. Then they can reserve a bag to collect from the store at an allotted time.

The budget supermarket said that these bags were most popular in December, with over 10,000 saved on Christmas Eve following Aldi’s decision to open orders for its Too Good To Go bags earlier than ever before.

“It’s incredible that more than a million of our Surprise Bags have now been saved by Aldi customers, helping to make a real difference when it comes to cutting down on food waste," said Luke Emery, national sustainability director, Aldi UK. “It’s a partnership we’re proud of and it’s great to be able to pass even more savings on to our customers as part of our longstanding commitment to provide high quality food at affordable prices.”

Aldi also provides surplus food from all its stores to hundreds of charities across the country through its partnership with Neighbourly.

The partnership saw the supermarket donate over £1.1 million worth of meals to those in need over the recent festive period.

The supermarket also works with Company Shop Group, the UK’s leading redistributor of surplus food and household products, to redistribute surplus food from its Regional Distribution Centres.

Last year, it provided more than 2,000 free Christmas lunches to Company Shop Group’s award-winning social enterprise, Community Shop.
