Aldi UK plans to add solar panels to a further 62 of its stores by the end of 2026, bringing the total number to over 500.
The project is part of an £8.4 million investment to install panels on 100 of its stores in 2025 and 2026. Each installation can provide up to 30 per cent of a store’s annual energy requirements, the supermarket said.
Aldi said it intends to roll out solar panels to stores in Stratford-upon-Avon, Maghull, Northampton and Wrexham in the near future.
The announcement follows spiking global energy prices caused by conflict in the Middle East, highlighting the benefits of localised power generation.
“We’ve made significant progress over the past year, and we are advancing the next phase of our solar rollout across even more stores in 2026,” said Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK. “The programme has expanded to cover even more sites than originally planned, and through ongoing investment in our estate, we’re making our operations more resilient while ensuring we continue to deliver great value for customers in a more sustainable way.”
Already the country’s fourth-largest supermarket chain, Aldi is currently on an expansion spree in the UK. In late January, it pledged to spend over £370 million to open 40 new stores this year as part of a £1.6 billion investment programme announced in 2025.
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority is currently running a consultation as to whether it and its fellow German retailer Lidl should be considered large retailers for land deal purposes following their rapid growth.
